On Saturday, more that 25 veterans participated in the Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike-Minneapolis.
Quac Tran, a Marine veteran and lead organizer, said the hike occurs across the nation to bring veterans together, using humor and camaraderie to heal the mental wounds of war.
"For a lot of us we get out of the military and we don't know what's going on," Tran said. "We are here to form relationships in an effort to reduce PTSD and prevent veteran suicide."
Organizers said the hikes support and spread their bottom line: "put the gun back on safe, put it back on the nightstand and stick around a bit longer."
According to a new data from the Department of Veterans Affairs, roughly 20 veterans a day commit suicide nationwide.
It is a figure that is slowly improving. In 2014, twenty-two veterans a day committed suicide nationwide.
