Hugo resident Sandra Proulx won $1 million on a Minnesota Millionaire Raffle ticket that was a Christmas gift from her mother.

“I didn’t know anything about the raffle, or what the prizes were,” Proulx said when she opened the Christmas card. “I didn’t think much of it.”

Proulx’s mother purchased raffle tickets for all of her adult children and their spouses for gifts, buying the tickets at different locations and times. Proulx’s mother discovered her daughter had won $1 million on New Year’s Day, as she had written down all of the raffle numbers before gifting them.

“My Mom said I won $1 million [via text] and I replied ‘oh whatever, Mom,’” said Proulx. Her mother then called her, and according to Proulx, “She was crying and kept saying I won. I was being overly cautious. I still don’t think it is real.”

Proulx’s $1 million winning raffle ticket was purchased at Forest Lake Moto Mart, located at 1898 S. Lake St., and it will receive $5,000 for selling the winning ticket.

“Until I see the money in the bank, I don’t think I’ll fully grasp what is happening,” Proulx said. “But little by little, I’m getting excited. I think I’ll head someplace warm for a while!”

The second $1 million winning raffle ticket in the Jan. 1, 2018, raffle has yet to be claimed.
