How The Final Phase Of Lowry Tunnel Construction Could Impact Your Commute

The final stage of Lowry Hill Tunnel construction is officially underway in Minneapolis.

That's good news long-term. But it wasn't great news for commuters Friday morning, some of whom were caught off-guard by newly-created congestion.

As part of this phase of construction, traffic was shifted to the westbound side of the tunnel with two lanes going in each direction.

For the most part, that stretch didn't appear to be unusually congested.

Potentially more problematic, however, is the fact that there is now a single lane of traffic taking drivers from I-394 east to I-94 east. According to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Traffic Reporter Josie Smith, that's where the more significant issues arose Friday.

"Everyone on 394 is really feeling the pressure in this phase of the tunnel project," she said. "You're down to one lane on the eastbound side of the tunnel, but that one lane continues over to 35W, so there's just not a lot of room for 394 traffic getting onto 94."

So what can you do if that's part of your morning commute?

Unfortunately, not much.

"I think we're just going to wait it out, give it a month, and when it's all done, let's just forget about it," Smith laughed.

The single lane from I-394 east to I-94 east will remain open until August 14. Then the ramp from I-394 east to I-94 east is scheduled to close until August 28.
