Funeral Schedule Set for Wayzata Police Officer Killed Friday

The funeral schedule for Wayzata police officer Bill Mathews, who died after being struck by a vehicle Friday, has been announced.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety said there will be a visitation for Matthews from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Wazata Free Church, located at 705 County Road 101 in Plymouth.

The funeral itself is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at the same location. Burial will follow at the Summit Park Cemetery in Wayzata.

The DPS said the public is welcome to attend.

Mathews was struck and killed by a woman driving a car on U.S. Hwy. 12 as he was picking up debris off the road. The woman has not been charged in the fatal crash, but a review of the incident is underway by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.

Charges were filed Monday against Beth Freeman and include two counts of criminal vehicular homicide and one count of driving after cancellation of her driver's license.

The criminal complaints states field sobriety tests indicated the influence of a controlled substance was "evident." She also told authorities she had been on the phone and texting prior to the accident.

Drug paraphernalia was found during a search warrant of the car, and tested positive for traces of cocaine.
