Murder Investigation Underway after Fridley Teen Found on Side of Road

July 19, 2017 01:16 PM

Cars line both sides of Meadowmoor Drive in Fridley as friends and family of 17-year-old Mohanned Abukhdeir gather in disbelief.

"It's a homicide, which we don't get a lot of and those that we do get are generally not 17-year-old victims," Cmdr. Paul Sommer, with the Anoka County Sheriff's Office, said.

The sheriff's office is helping Fridley police in a murder investigation after finding the teen's body on the side of a Fridley road early Monday morning.

Abukhdeir was laying face-down just up the road from his home. Authorities say he had been shot.

Sommer says someone called 911 early Monday morning to report a man lying in the street. Sommer declined to say who that was as it's part of the investigation.

Authorities say foul play is suspected and that the victim wasn't randomly chosen.

"We feel that this was probably targeted," Sommer said. "That this individual was probably targeted by his attackers."

Fridley police, the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office and the Anoka County Sheriff's Office are investigating.

This is the second homicide in Fridley so far this year.
