A pedestrian was killed in Bloomington after the driver of a commercial vehicle swerved to avoid another vehicle.

The crash was reported at 6:53 a.m. Monday at the intersection of 86th Street and Nicollet Avenue.

Officers arrived to find a pedestrian trapped under one of the vehicles. Police say he died from his injuries.

According to the preliminary investigation, a commercial vehicle with an attached trailer and an Xcel Energy logo was heading south on Nicollet Avenue and swerved to avoid a car that was trying to turn west on 86th Street from northbound Nicollet Avenue.

The commercial vehicle left the road and hit the pedestrian and a utility pole on the southwest corner of the intersection.

The victim has not yet been identified.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident and our sympathies and thoughts are with the victim’s family at this most difficult time,” Xcel Energy – Minnesota President Chris Clark said in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering information and will continue to work with local law enforcement.”

The Bloomington Police Department, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol are investigating.
