WATCH: Dean Barkley Sworn in as U.S. Senator in 2002

There is speculation embattled U.S. Sen. Al Franken will announce his resignation Thursday. Which would mean Gov. Mark Dayton would appoint his successor.

The last time a governor had to fill a vacant Senate seat came in 2002, when Gov. Jesse Ventura appointed Dean Barkley to fill out the term of Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone when Wellstone was killed in a plane crash.
