In a meeting Friday, Gov. Mark Dayton urged Mille Lacs County officials to continue working with the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe to come up with a public safety agreement.

In July 2016, Mille Lacs County revoked a 25-year-old joint law enforcement agreement with tribal police on the Reservation of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, which means the officers can't enforce state law on the reservation.

Dayton urged the two parties to continue working through mediation to find an agreement.

"They say they want to get a resolution to the dispute and get a new cooperative agreement," Dayton told the media after the meeting. "I think both sides sincerely want that, there is just a big divide, and that will be the task for the mediator."

Earlier this week Dayton called the issue a "public safety crisis."

Tribal leaders told KSTP they believe the lack of law enforcement officials on the reservation has led to an uptick of drug crimes and overdoses.
