The Charter Commission of the Minneapolis City Council Wednesday began discussing an amendment to the police department charter that would give the City Council shared control over the department with the mayor.
Some City Council members have said they want the power to change police department policies. Right now, that power rests solely with the mayor.
Council member Cam Gordon has proposed that Police Chief Medaria Arradondo also report to the 13 council members, instead of only to Mayor Jacob Frey.
Right now, there are two ways to amend the city charter. One is by passing an ordinance from the full council and mayor. The other is to put it on the ballot for voters to decide, which is what Gordon has called for.
The amendment being considered Wednesday would be submitted to voters for approval this November.
Frey opposes the proposal.
