A Chisago County man who was charged with assault after police say he punched another teen unconscious during a dispute on Memorial Day has pleaded not guilty.

Nineteen-year-old Andrew Walker Erickson of Stacy pleaded not guilty Wednesday to third-degree assault. A jury trial has been scheduled for Jan. 9, 2017.

According to the criminal complaint, a group of people was playing beach volleyball at a park in Columbus on Memorial Day when Erickson and the 17-year-old victim got into an argument.

Police say Erickson became upset and punched the teen once in the temple. The victim became unconscious and had to be taken to a hospital by paramedics.

Police say Erickson fled when he learned police were going to be called.

If convicted, Erickson faces up to five years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.
