Previous Experience

Brandi Powell is an Anchor/Reporter with KSTP-TV (ABC Affiliate) in Minneapolis/St. Paul. She has been part of the KSTP-TV 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS team, since January of 2014.  You can watch Brandi anchoring newscasts on 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 6am-7am and 8am-9am, as well as on Saturday nights from 5pm-5:30pm, 6pm-6:30pm and 10pm-10:30pm. She also anchors the Saturday night newscasts on 45TV from 9pm-9:30pm. Brandi reports news stories from the field on Thursday and Friday evenings between 4:30pm-7pm. 

Brandi was a Reporter/Multi-Media Journalist at KNSD-TV (NBC 7 San Diego) from 2011-2013. She covered breaking news, crime and politics. While at KNSD-TV, she also served as a regular on-air contributor for "Politically Speaking", the station's weekly political show.  She was a Reporter/Video Journalist/Bell County Bureau Chief, from 2008-2009, at News 8 Austin (now named Time Warner News – Spectrum). She covered Fort Hood and its surrounding communities.  Her first on-air position was as the Political Reporter at KFYR-TV (NBC Affiliate) in Bismarck, North Dakota. From 2006-2008, she covered statewide elections and legislative sessions.

Brandi began her career, behind-the-scenes, as a Production Assistant at MSNBC, from 2005-2006.  She was an Intern with The Washington Center for the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City. She was also an Intern with Dateline NBC in 2004. 


Brandi earned her Master of Arts degree in Anthropology from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Her concentration was International Development. From 2009-2011, Brandi was a full-time graduate school student in Washington, DC.  In 2004, Brandi earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  Her minor at UNLV was Spanish. She studied abroad in Barcelona and Salamanca, Spain. 

Professional Organizations & Awards

Brandi is a member of National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and Twin Cities Black Journalists (TCBJ) Awards.  Brandi has won multiple team Emmy awards and earned individual Emmy nominations.  She has also won two North Dakota Associated Press awards.

Personal Interests

Brandi enjoys traveling near and far, as she loves learning about different cultures. She has fun painting, watching movies, hiking and going to live jazz & theater performances. She's conversational in Spanish, and still keeps in touch with her friends in Spain who she met while studying abroad in college. Brandi emcees events and moderates panel discussions in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. She lives in Minneapolis and is engaged to be married.
