Minnesota Moment: Brainerd Lakes Area Man Puts Hamster Wheel to Good Use

A Minnesota man is going to great lengths to raise $20,000 for charity.

Gary Walters, known as 'That Guy' in the Brainerd Lakes area, has been raising money for different charitable causes for 14 years now.

But this year, he's walking 200 miles in his human hamster wheel - from Brainerd to Bemidji and back. And the money he's raising from that effort will go to benefit Kids Against Hunger, The Confidence Learning Center and Brainerd Public Schools.

It's an idea that came to him at the State Fair. But he said it hasn't been easy.

"It sounded like a great idea," Walters said. "It looked like a great idea. Now with about 15 miles (to go)...its like stair-stepping for eight-straight hours."

Walters hoped to raise $20,000. But he's already raised around $18,000, and thinks he can exceed his goal.

He'll finish his trip Friday at the Jack Pine Brewery in Brainerd. But he said that won't be the end.

Eventually, he'd like to walk from Los Angeles to New York.
