'Voice of the Help Desk' for Monticello Schools Killed in Car Crash

A Monticello School District employee was killed Wednesday morning in Big Lake Township when the vehicle he was driving was struck by an SUV.

A school district official confirmed the victim, Matthew Daniel Barthel, worked in the district's technology department, calling him the "voice of the help desk."

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the 33-year-old Barthel was southbound in a 2008 Mazda 3 on Sherburne County Road 81 just before 8 a.m. and crossing the intersection with U.S. Highway 10 on a green light.

At the same time, a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound on Hwy. 10 entered the intersection on a red light and hit Barthel, causing him to crash into a third vehicle.

The driver of the Grand Cherokee was identified as 35-year-old Juan Carlos Garcia Morales.

The State Patrol report said Barthel's air bag was not deployed. He was taken to Centra Care Monticello.
