According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the 33-year-old Barthel was southbound in a 2008 Mazda 3 on Sherburne County Road 81 just before 8 a.m. and crossing the intersection with U.S. Highway 10 on a green light.

At the same time, a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound on Hwy. 10 entered the intersection on a red light and hit Barthel, causing him to crash into a third vehicle.

The driver of the Grand Cherokee was identified as 35-year-old Juan Carlos Garcia Morales.

The State Patrol report said Barthel's air bag was not deployed. He was taken to Centra Care Monticello.

Barthel's family has established a GoFundMe page to help with funeral and family expenses. Find it here.
