State Patrol Pursuit Ends with Suspect Vehicle Crashing in Fridley Menards Parking Lot

A Minnesota State Patrol pursuit ended with a stolen vehicle crashing in a Menards store parking lot in Fridley early Monday morning.

The crash happened in the lot, near Highway 65 and Interstate 694, just after 3 a.m.


The state patrol reports pursuing a 2017 Cadillac, which had been stolen, in the area of 66th Street and Camden Avenue. The driver and passenger refused to comply with a traffic stop, according to state patrol, and sped off.

Authorities pursued the Cadillac for roughly five miles before the Cadillac crashed in the parking lot.

According to a KSTP crew at the scene, the vehicle apparently hit a light pole in the lot. Authorities with the Minnesota State Patrol said the vehicle also caught fire after it crashed.

In addition to state patrol, two ambulances were at the scene.

The state patrol reports the Cadillac's driver, 27-year-old Donzell James, from Chicago, suffered life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, 27-year-old passenger Kewan Deangelo Smith suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Both were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Authorities determined alcohol was a factor in the crash; alcohol was detected in James' and Smith's systems.
