Another Catch-and-Release Walleye Season on Mille Lacs Seems Likely

It appears that 2018 may mark another year of catch-and-release when it comes to walleye fishing on Lake Mille Lacs.

Mille Lacs area business owners have been holding out hope this could be the year the walleye population in the lake makes a turn, allowing anglers to start catching and keeping fish again.

But that does not appear to be the case.

During an interview with KSTP's Bill Lunn Thursday at DNR Headquarters, DNR Fisheries Chief Don Pereira said that while no official announcement has yet been made, it does not appear the walleye population has bounced back enough yet to allow anglers to take home fish.

Last year, there was a month-long closure in any fishing for walleye on the lake. But Pereira hopes that won't be the case this year.

"We're trying to figure out what we can do, if anything, to keep from closing it this season," he said. "We really want to try and keep it open at least through Labor Day if we can."
