Two people were taken into custody after St. Paul police say an officer was assaulted Wednesday afternoon while responding to a report of a violation of an order for protection.

"Even the most mundane calls can turn dangerous for law enforcement - in a split second," the department tweeted Thursday. "Yesterday one of our officers was attacked during an everyday call.

"Thankfully he's expected to recover from his physical injuries. "

Steve Linders, the department's public information coordinator, said officer Dominic Dzik, a 16-year veteran of the force, required a staple in his head to close the wounds suffered in the incident.

Coni Lamark Shegog and Erin Jeanetta Bohanon were taken into custody by officers.

Linders said Dzik responded to the 300 block of Cook Avenue East at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. There, he reportedly spoke with a woman who said a neighbor - Bohanon - had allegedly violated an order for protection earlier in the day.

While speaking with Dzik, she reportedly told him a van had pulled up with Bohanon inside the vehicle.

As Dzik went over to speak to Bohanon, Linders said Shegog - the driver of the vehicle - is alleged to have started screaming at him.

He then reportedly got out of the vehicle and began coming toward Dzik, slapping the officer's arm out of the way to keep approaching.

Linders said Dzik used a chemical irritant and tried to arrest Shegog, who allegedly began hitting him with a key - striking him eight times in the head.

After backup arrived, Linders said Shegog is alleged to have continued to fight with Dzik and another officer. He is also alleged to have spit at four officers while being placed in a squad car.

Bohanon, meanwhile, was arrested after she reportedly walked over to the woman and attempted to strike her with a fist during the incident.
