Cotter had further been charged with 12 counts of possession of pornographic work, but those charges were dismissed Thursday.

An investigation into Cotter's alleged activities began in 2016, when he was 16 years old. Investigators found more than 45,000 images, some of which showed children as young as 6.

The cybertrail started with a red flag from Google on Feb. 26 of 2016, according to the criminal complaint. In June of that year, officers executed a search warrant at his Plymouth home – taking laptops, thumb drives and SD cards.

The complaint says analysis showed Cotter used Twitter, Snapchat and Gmail to facilitate sharing and trading with other social media users.

At least 1,000 images and videos were identified as child pornography.
