New Medical Center Wellness Room Has Many Benefits

This is the time of year when cabin fever tends to set in.

Add a stressful job on top of that, and it can really bring on the winter blues.

But employees at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee have a new place to unwind and get refreshed.

The hospital opened a new wellness room Wednesday.

"I think if people take better care of themselves, they're going to be at work more and sick less" said Mike McMahan, the medical center's president.

Doctors, nurses and staff can take yoga classes, use the fitness equipment or meditate. And the best part is it's just down the hallway.

"Very few places offer free access, 24-hour access, free classes," said Michelle Enderson, the wellness coordinator at the medical center.  "It's all about grounding yourself.

"When you look at the whole person, and you look at whole person care, you look at how you take care of yourself first and then that bleeds out. That comes out, that transfers to everybody around you; whether it's your family, your co-workers, your patients, your clients or whatever."

"The reality is healthcare workers often put patient care over their own health and well-being," McMahan added. "So this is a nice added feature from a benefit standpoint that helps contribute to a better environment to work.

"And healthcare workers; we need them to be healthy."

St. Francis Regional Medical Center has almost 800 employees and runs three shifts. The wellness room is open 24 hours a day because the hospital is open all day and night as well.
