Multiple children at Cherry View Elementary School in Lakeville were sick with symptoms of norovirus Friday, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.
MDH did not list the official cause of the illnesses in a letter to parents, but epidemiologist Marijke Decuir said the symptoms were consistent with norovirus infections.
The school took precautions to prevent the illness from spreading, including the temporary elimination of self-serve food and increased sanitizing by custodial staff, Decuir wrote in the letter.
Norovirus is often referred to as the "stomach flu," but it is not related to influenza, a respiratory infection. The virus can remain infectious on surfaces for several weeks, and normal household cleaners do not sufficiently prevent that.
