A Minneapolis nurse is facing five counts of theft by swindle after authorities say he stole drugs from the Veteran Affairs Medical Center on 34 different days.
Matthew Leininger, 42, is charged with stealing the drugs between June 22 and Dec. 25, 2016, according to a release from the Hennepin County Attorney's Office. Among the drugs he is accused of stealing are fentanyl, morphine and oxycodone.
The criminal complaint alleges that in an interview with the Office of Inspector General, Leininger said "he used the drugs to help with his mental health."
The release states investigators spoke to Leininger on Dec. 28, 2016, and his access to the drugs was ended. He was fired in March of this year.
