After a week of violence, Edina city leaders are urging people to donate blood.

“This is a very tense and uncertain world with violence erupting every day, and the need for blood banks has never been higher,” Sgt. Kevin Rofidal said in a statement.

To help, the city is sponsoring a blood drive for Memorial Blood Centers next month.

Anyone who lives or works in Edina is encouraged to come to the event, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Edina City Hall.

Donors must:

  • Be at least 17 years old or 16 with a signed parental consent form
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds
  • Be free of antibiotics for at least 24 hours unless taken daily for a skin condition
  • By symptom-free for at least three days after a cold or flu

To sign up, email Jennifer Lyons at or visit and enter sponsor code 0111.
