A push to help Twin Cities communities get ready for the Digital TV transition. Assistance Centers are open now in Minnesota and six other states nationwide. Three groups are doing outreach to communities most at-risk in metro. The Lao Assistance Center, the Main Street Project and the Leadership Council on Civil Rights are teaming up to make sure their communities will not be blacked out from digital television come June 12. Steven Renderos from Minnesotano Media Empowerment project said, "I grew up depending on free over the air television. My family still depends on analong television. it's a resource for education, for children's programing for the Spanish Speaking community in Minnesota and its one of the things we really depend on." On Wednesday, two DTV assistance centers targeting the Hmong and Spanish speaking communities opened in the Twin Cities. The groups will train people how to hook up a converter box and offer an exchange program for those unable to get a 40 dollar off coupon. Organizers worry without action members of their community could be without TV reception and missing out on more than entertainment.
