J.C. Penney announced it is closing 138 stores across the country, including eight Minnesota locations.

J.C. Penney announced the closures in February, and said the move is to help improve profitability.

The Minnesota stores closing are located in Baxter, Fairmont, Faribault, Hibbing, Hutchinson, Red Wing, Thief River Falls and Winona.

In a press release, the company said approximately 5,000 positions across the country are impacted by closures, which are mostly scheduled for June.

J.C. Penney states it is helping employees relocate into other positions in the company and assisting with "outplacement support services."
