Shouting ‘death to the dictator,’ protesters lit fires and smashed windows on the streets of Tehran, Iran. They say the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a fraud. Some local Iranian Americans living in Minnesota say they agree. One group that will be holding a demonstration on the University of Minnesota campus Monday. Some here and in Iran want an immediate investigation into the country’s latest election. However, others believe just having an election is a step in the right direction. "I was hoping he wouldn't get elected again because he really didn't do any good for our country. I guess we'll have to be wait and be patient," said Minneapolis resident Forough Aghamalizadeh. Iranian national Javad Feghahati voted in this election. While he wouldn't say for whom, he did liken the demonstrations to riots during the Republican National Convention. "We had the Republican Convention here, and people got arrested so we're seeing a similar problem in Iran and in other countries at times of elections," Feghahati explained. "I think people if are organizing, getting into the streets that in itself is revolutionary," said Jay Shahidi with the Iranian American Society of Minnesota. He also questions the validity of the election and believes the uprising in Iran sends a clear message of the thirst for democracy. "Even if his is legitimately elected now he's a different person because he would have to listen to the millions of people on the streets," Shahidi said. There is an estimated 3,000 Iranian Americans in Minnesota. Monday's protest is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. |
