Viewer FAQ: Digital TV Reception

Thank you for being a KSTP and KSTC viewer. We have assembled the below information to help you resolve your DTV reception issue or get help from someone that can. If you need information about the converter box coupon program or need help installing your converter please skip past the FAQ below where you will find that type of information.

FAQ - Digital TV Reception

1. I can receive all the digital TV stations except KSTP.

A. Do an Auto Channel Scan for the digital channels.

I. Many Twin Cities TV stations have changed the channels they are broadcasting on and the Auto Channel Scan is needed to find them again.
II. Please refer to your operation & owner manual that you received with the converter or Tv for information on how to do the channel scan.
B. If the above doesn't fix the problem: Adjust the aiming of the antenna.
I. Many TV’s and converter boxes will allow you to enter the UHF channel that KSTP broadcasts on which is channel 35. If your device allows you to do that and it says that it is 5-1 but it says “No Signal”, then reaim the antenna while someone is watching the TV for the best most consistent signal.
· Adjusting the aiming slightly can increase the signal received and eliminate a reflection that will cause the digital signal receiver to unlock which causes the picture and sound to break up.
· Once the antenna has been properly aimed you may need to rescan for the digital channels so that you can select the channel with the channel up & down button or entering the virtual channel 5-1 rather than the actual broadcast channel 35.

C. If the above doesn’t fix the problem: Move the antenna to a new location that has better reception.
I. Like cell phone reception, the best signal may be a foot away or several feet away from the current location and higher elevation is usually better.
II. This will likely take some experimenting to find the best location that allows you to receive all of the digital channels
.
D. If the above doesn’t fix the problem: Check your cable connections all the way from the antenna to the TV to make sure they are good and that there are no unneeded splitters in the line.
I. Each time the signal is split it is divided by the number ports on the splitter, so splitters should be replaced with a distribution amplifier that can be purchased at Radio Shack.
II. If you can’t replace the splitter with a distribution amplifier make sure that any unused wall or splitter outlets are terminated with a low cost terminator that they can purchase at Radio Shack.
E. If the above doesn’t fix the problem: Replace the converter box with a Zenith or Insignia converter.
I. Our testing has shown that the Zenith converter is the best performer when there is multipath interference. The Insignia is also manufactured by Zenith.

F. If the above doesn’t fix the problem: Replace the antenna with a higher quality UHF antenna and then again follow the steps a - d above.

I. Many TV’s and converter boxes will allow you to enter the UHF channel that KSTC broadcasts on which is channel 45. If your device allows you to do that and it says that it is 45-1 but it says “No Signal”, then reaim the antenna while someone is watching the TV for the best most consistent signal.

3. Why do some channels come and go?

A. There are two significant technical issues with digital television reception.

I. The first being that if the signal is below the threshold level of your receivers capability you will get no picture and when it is above the threshold you get a perfect picture.
· It can take very little change to make it go from perfect to nonexistent on your TV.
· The signal level change can be caused by a long cable, a splitter, penetrating a building or roof, reflections, leaves on the tress, wind, or from other atmospheric conditions like moisture in the air.
II. The second issue is that the receiver can only lock to one signal at a time.
· If there are reflections (ghosts) it can get confused and will not show a picture even though you have a lot of signal.
· Reflections can come and go with everything from the trees blowing in the wind, airplanes flying over, and even cars driving down the road.
· Antennas located inside of the attic or home can suffer the most from reflection interference because even people in motion can cause interference.
III. Compounding the problems for digital reception is the fact that most homes have combination VHF/UHF antennas on the roof or in the attic. These antennas were designed to perform best in the VHF band because the key network TV stations have always been in the VHF band. That's changed now with digital. Today most of the TV stations in the Twin Cities are broadcasting their digital signal in the UHF band and some are very high in the UHF band. Digital TV reception requires a better performing UHF antenna to receive the UHF stations well.

B. The key to getting good reliable reception is to get a much signal as possible and eliminate the reflections. This is done by:
I. Using the proper antenna.
II. Installing the antenna in the best location. Digital TV signals are a lot like Cell Phone signals in that you can have a hot spot where there is good signal but a foot away is a cold spot with little signal or many reflected signals.
III. Properly aim the antenna to eliminate reflections.

C. There are technical issues with some TV’s and Converter boxes.
I. Some over the air devices will lose their channel mapping for no reason and the channel will disappear until you rescan for the digital channels.
II. If you are a cable customer, some devices are sensitive to changes that the cable company makes in their channel line-up that will cause you to lose channels until you rescan for them.

4. How do I rescan for the digital channels?

A. Each TV and converter box manufacturer does it differently so you should refer to your operations guide for the device.

I. If you don’t have the operations guide, most devices have a “menu” button that either gives the choice for “Setup” and then “Auto Tuning”, or “Antenna” and then “Auto Tuning”.
II. The auto tuning can take up to 15 minutes to complete if you have cable. If you have just an over the air antenna it usually only takes about 5 minutes.

5. How can I get help installing my converter box?
See below information.

6. Where should I aim my antenna?

A. The TV towers are located in Shoreview. Start by aiming in that direction then adjust the aiming from that point in either direction until you receive the best signal.

B. Viewers with Internet access can go to www.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/maps/. By typing in their zip code the map will show the channels available and when the channel is selected it will show the direction to the transmitters in Shoreview.
