Budget cuts leave local colleges, students hurting
An innovative program that makes the first two years of college available tuition free for graduates of Minneapolis or St. Paul public high schools may not be able to make some student’s dreams of college come true due to the state’s budget deficit.
The program called ‘Power of You’—a collaboration of Minneapolis Community and Technical College, St. Paul College, and Metropolitan State University—is designed to significantly increase the post-secondary participation rates of these students, particularly students of color.
"We’re disappointed with the governor’s veto," said Power of You Director Nasreen Mohamed.
Program coordinators say $2 million for the 2010 to 2011 school year was slashed from the budget.
"We’re going to be trying to figure out how to fund the new incoming class," Mohamed said.
While private donors also fund the program, Mohamed says money is scares from all resources. The program wouldn’t say how many students would be affected.
