Mpls. couple: Insurance won't pay for grandchild's surgery
A two-month-old baby in desperate need of a heart transplant, but caught in the middle of an insurance dilemma, has been flown to a transplant hospital in Pittsburgh.
Laith Dougherty's grandparents, Dave and Nancy Moe, of Minneapolis, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the hospital will do the transplant.
Laith's parents, who live in Portland, Oregon, were told their insurance company would not cover a transplant. The Seattle hospital where Leith had been treated at told them they could only perform the surgery if the Doughertys paid the $1.5 million cost upfront.
The Pittsburgh hospital has agreed to install a "Berlin pump" in Laith's heart. It's a risky procedure, but Laith has little to lose.
"That gives them the opportunity to live long enough to wait for a heart transplant," Dave Moe said.
On Friday, Laith got two Berlin pumps put in his heart.
"They're pretty certain that their insurance will cover it now at this facility or it's being paid for one way or another. It could be it's a teaching hospital, they're wanting to do it for learning reasons, we don't know," Dave Moe said
