A city of Minneapolis spokesman said Tuesday night that a solid waste and recycling employee has been removed from field duties pending a criminal investigation and an internal probe.
The employee is one of two suspected of using their city positions to swindle taxpayers.
The investigation centers around homes with over-grown yards or other appearance issues.
After giving homeowners notice to clean-up their problem properties or face fines, the two employees are accused of returning and offering to make the warnings go away by cleaning the yards for $100 in cash.
An initial police report shows investigators are looking at records as far back as May 1, 2008.
Investigators don't know yet how much money may be involved, how many city employees may have taken part, or whether the crime happened while the employees were on the clock.
In addition to the police investigation, an internal human resources probe is also underway.
