|"You don't know what you have until it's gone. I was born and raised in the Midwest and I didn't realize how much I loved the seasons and people until I left three years ago. I am so grateful for the opportunity to come back and start the next chapter of my career at KSTP."|
Joe joined 5 Eyewitness News in July of 2014. Prior to his move back to the Twin Cities, he was at WOI-DT in Des Moines, IA, and KRGV in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Joe spent three years covering the immigration crisis, smuggling issues and spillover violence along the Texas-Mexico border. The Texas Associated Press of Broadcasters (TAPB) named him one of the best reporters in Texas in 2012. The State Bar of Texas honored him with the Gavel Award in 2014 for exposing flaws and delays in the immigration court systems. Joe was also honored with the Hidalgo County Bar Association Media Award in 2012 for highlighting complex legal issues in the indigent community.
Joe graduated from the University of Iowa in 2009 with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication.
Joe loves watching, playing, officiating and coaching basketball. He’s a Hawkeye fan (hopefully viewers can look past that) who enjoys watching college football in the fall. Fishing is one of his favorite hobbies and he’s looking forward to casting on many of the 10,000 lakes.
