The father of a 17-year-old boy who is accused of plotting to kill his family and attack his southern Minnesota school says there were no signs his son was having problems.

The father spoke with reporters Wednesday after a hearing for his son in Waseca.

He says he didn't know his son had a storage locker that police say contained bomb-making materials. And he wishes the teen would've asked for help before his April arrest.

John LaDue appeared in court Wednesday on charges of 12 felonies, including four counts of attempted first degree murder.

Capt. Kris Markeson of the Waseca Police Department said La Due told investigators his plan was to kill his family and start a fire in rural Waseca to distract first responders from the area of the school. Markeson said LaDue planned to go to the Waseca Junior/Senior High School where he wanted to set off numerous bombs during the lunch hour, kill the school resource officer, start fires and then shoot students and staff.

Markeson said LaDue also planned to be killed by responding officers.

A 180-page journal found at the teen's home outlined the attack in great detail, Markeson said. A judge is keeping the journal under seal for now.

LaDue was arrested at a storage locker that authorities say contained bomb-making materials, and he also allegedly had numerous guns in his room.

Markeson said LaDue originally planned the attack for April 20, the anniversary of the Columbine school shooting, but it was on a Sunday this year.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
