A 1952 graduate of Macalester College, Joan Mondale is being remembered as a modest, gracious advocate for the arts.

"She really believed that art should be part of everyday life for every person, that it enriched life, it made you more wise, more empathetic.," said Macalester College President Brian Rosenberg.

She sat on the board at the college for 20 years, and in that time made changes that included arts initiatives in every building project.

"One of the things she did on the board was made a policy that stated for every building project we did, 1% of the budget had to be devoted to public art," said Rosenberg.

She earned the nickname Joan of Art.  Art professor Ruthann Godollei says Mondale's focus on arts didn't stop at Macalaster.

While Walter Mondale served as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan, the couple got Japanese ceramics as gifts.  Joan later donated some of them to the college where they are now on display.

A service of thanksgiving for the life of Joan Mondale will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the sanctuary of Westminster Presbyterian Church. The Mondale's are longtime members of the historic downtown church.

A reception hosted by the former vice president and his family will immediately follow the service in the lobby of Orchestra Hall, across the street from the church.

Joan Mondale formerly served on the Orchestra Hall board of directors.

A prelude of music will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. The service will be streamed live on the church's website.
