Former Gophers quarterback Philip Nelson is staying in the Big Ten conference by joining Rutgers. Nelson, a sophomore who battled for the starting role this season, told KSTP's Darren Wolfson via text Wednesday he is transferring to Rutgers. Nelson announced he was leaving the program earlier this month.

Nelson will still have two years of eligibility with Rutgers because the school has not officially joined the Big Ten Conference - that happens on July 1. Nelson said earlier this month he was looking for a more pass-oriented offense. He threw for 1,306 yards and nine touchdowns in nine games this season for the Gophers.

Rutgers and Minnesota will play for the first time as conference foes in 2016, when Rutgers travel to TCF Bank Stadium.

Philip Nelson announced earlier this month he will leave the Gophers after finishing his sophomore season.
