Wis. DNR Urges Deer Hunters to Look for Wild Pigs

Wisconsin wildlife officials are asking deer hunters to be on the lookout for wild pigs.

The animals have been a problem in Wisconsin for more than a decade. They've been spotted in at least 51 counties since 1997. Their rooting is highly destructive and they can carry diseases that can affect humans and domestic swine.

Hunters with a license can kill wild pigs year round except for the Friday before the start of the nine-day gun deer season in November. Landowners can shoot them on their property without a license.

Department of Natural Resources officials want hunters to file reports of any sightings on the agency's website. They also want anyone who kills a wild pig to contact the agency so biologists can take tissue samples for disease testing.
