Officials at the University of Minnesota have lifted a warning for students to take shelter after a man with a gun tried to rob a student in Anderson Hall on the West Bank campus Monday afternoon.

Officials say the suspect displayed a gun and tried to rob a female student of her laptop around 3 p.m. She screamed and the suspect took off through a tunnel system.

The suspect is described as a black man, about 20 years old, 6 feet tall, wearing a black, puffy jacket with a hood. People are asked to call 911 if they see the suspect.

Shortly after the alert, students were still seen walking across campus and even in and out of Anderson Hall while the shelter in place warning was still in effect.

A search of the West Bank was done, and police determined the suspect immediately left campus. They also determined the gun was not fired. Officials then canceled the shelter in place.

Police remain on alert.

All regular classes and activities continued as planned Monday evening.

The university sent out an alert to students and faculty shortly before 3:30 p.m. Anderson Hall is located at 257 19th Avenue SE in Minneapolis.

In an unrelated incident, police were responding to a possible gas leak on the East Bank campus.

Editor’s Note: The University of Minnesota Police Department has cleared the initial "person of interest" of any wrongdoing after the attempted robbery on the campus. They have also released a photo Wednesday of a new "person of interest" in the incident. (Pictured here).
