Two women were charged after admitting they stole merchandise from a Coon Rapids JCPenney.

Officers were called to the JCPenney on Riverdale Boulevard Northwest around 4:16 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, on a shoplifting report. A manager told police that two women stole clothing and left in a green vehicle with the license plate 868-HUT.

A community service officer was in the area and saw the vehicle driving eastbound on Highway 10, according to the criminal complaint. The officer pursued the vehicle onto Highway 610 and then Highway 252 in Brooklyn Park before stopping the girls near Humboldt Avenue.

The driver gave the officer what turned out to be a fake name and age, according to the criminal complaint. She said she was a 17-year-old girl with the initials A.R., but she was later revealed to be 25-year-old Lasonya Denise Miles of Minneapolis, police say.

Miles admitted to the officer that she and the passenger, 23-year-old Shanika Charlene Bonner of Minneapolis, stole items from JCPenney. The merchandise found in the car was worth more than $1,600.

Bonner has been charged with theft. If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and $10,000 in fines. Miles has been charged with theft and giving false information to police. If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and $10,000 in fines on the theft charge and up to one year in prison and $3,000 in fines on the false information charge.
