Stomach Bug Outbreak Spreads in the US

More Americans are sick with a stomach bug that is typically only seen in the tropics.

So far, 321 people in 14 states have cyclosporiasis, including one in Minnesota. That number climbed since Thursday where 285 people were sick.

In the past four days, Florida, Missouri, Arkansas, and New York all saw new cases.

It’s still unknown how the parasite got to the United States.
“If we have more cases in Minnesota, that will give the Minnesota Departments of Health and Agriculture a chance to get in and identify what the source of that might be so we can remove that product rapidly from the market,” Craig Hedberg with the University of Minnesota School of Public Health said.

Because the Centers for Disease Control is unsure what produce to avoid, Hedberg suggests washing all fruits and vegetables carefully and eating them soon after purchase.
