Email17 Pavement Buckles in 1 Day Prompts Warning in Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is warning drivers to keep an even closer eye on the road ahead Thursday and Friday because of an increased risk of pavement buckling.
WisDOT said it responded to 17 reports of pavement buckling on Wednesday alone.
"During hot weather, pavement tends to expand," said a WisDOT spokesperson. "Where there are expansion joints, the slabs of pavement push against each other and if the pressure becomes high enough the pavement may buckle."
Much of Wisconsin is under an excessive heat warning until Friday night.
“We are continuing to monitor the major highways and are coordinating with county highway maintenance crews in case of more buckling today and tomorrow,” said WisDOT's Rory Rhinesmith on Thursday. “However, pavement bucklings typically are quite random and motorists need to be prepared.”
