With the start of July, new laws took effect on Minnesota lakes.
One law increases fines for boaters who don’t check for invasive species, but boaters are split on whether it will work.
Some people say they don’t know if fines are the right answer, while others say “if it hits you in the pocketbook, it’s going to work.”
The DNR raised the fines for people caught violating Minnesota’s aquatic invasive species, or AIS, laws. For the most part, the penalties doubled.
If you have any equipment that’s hard to clean, like boat lifts, docks, and swim rafts, you’re required to dry them out for at least 21 days. That’s how long it takes for any aquatic invasive species to die out.
Also, boat clubs, yacht clubs, and marinas are now required to go through AIS certification training.
