Previous Experience
John Mason is Assistant News Director for 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.  Before his promotion in February 2010 he was Managing Editor and spent five years anchoring and reporting for 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.

Awards
John has anchored and reported the news for nearly 30 years and has been honored with many industry awards and accolades for excellence.  He recently won a National Emmy for his Anchor work covering the 35W Bridge Collapse and was part of the team that won a National Headliner Award for coverage of a tornado in Cleveland, Minnesota in 2007.  John was part of the team that won an Edward R. Murrow Regional Award for 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS' Continuing Coverage of missing explosives in Iraq.  And he received a second Edward R. Murrow Regional Award for Investigative Reporting for his story "An Expensive Pill to Swallow" which was an investigation into large price mark-ups on generic prescription drugs. 

Education
John earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech from Lewis University, near Chicago in Romeoville, Illinois. In June 2006, Lewis University awarded John its Alumni Achievement Award for Broadcast Journalism.

Personal Information
John is a Chicago native.  He and his wife Laurie have three daughters: Katie, Leigh Ann and Alison.
