Dave Dahl - Chief Meteorologist
|"When I joined 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, they were the only station in town with a full-time meteorology department. Since that time, I've valued my position here because of the high standards that guide this news operation."|
Director Of Region's Most Preferred Source For Complete Weather Coverage
Dave joined 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS in 1977 and has been on the air since 1979. He oversees one of the most responsive and accurate weather tracking operations in the industry - and the region's preferred source for complete weather coverage. He delivers his weather forecasts on 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS weeknights at 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 10 p.m. Dave also provides the forecast and current weather warnings or advisories weekdays on KS95's morning show, KS95's afternoon show with Moon and Staci, and 1500 ESPN Twin Cities.
1998 Broadcaster of the Year
Dave has received the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for television and radio weather broadcasting and was named 1998 Broadcaster of the Year by the Minnesota Broadcaster's Association. Other professional accomplishments include producing a documentary on tornado-chasing for The Weather Channel and a special report on The Discovery Channel for his tornado chase in April 1996. Dave also received an Emmy Award in 2003 for Single Newscast ("Wellstone Crash").
Teaching Students To Respect Mother Nature
It was a tornado, in fact, that inspired Dave's interest in meteorology. When Dave was a child, he witnessed a tornado. He was so frightened and fascinated that he decided to learn everything he could about the weather. Today, Dave is a favorite weather and science teacher to thousands of students in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. For the past 15 years, Dave has spent much of his personal time making weekly presentations on the basics of meteorology.
A father of five and true blue Minnesotan, Dave actively supports many worthy causes in our communities. To name a few: Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Kiwanis, Rotary, and on a very personal level, the American Heart Association - in gratitude for his daughter Kayla's successful heart surgery at the age of two.
Born and raised in Minnesota, Dave attended the University of Minnesota and earned his degree in meteorology from Florida State University before coming home to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. A hard-working professional who exhibits a style of warmth and modesty, Dave is motivated by a personal mission.
Guiding Viewers Safely Through Severe Weather
"I hope that in some way I can teach our viewers how to deal with weather of all types, and in particular, guide them safely through severe weather," says Dave. "In doing so, I hope our viewers will feel more at ease when severe weather strikes, knowing that we'll be here to let them know everything that's going on."
