Minn. House Approves State Limits on Abortion

The Minnesota House has given final approval to two bills that put new state limits on abortion, with just one last step before they get sent on to likely vetoes by abortion rights supporter Gov. Mark Dayton.

One bill passed Thursday prohibits abortions starting at 20 weeks after conception unless it would save the woman's life, or prevent lasting physical impairment. A separate bill passed to ban public funding of abortions. Both bills passed on votes of 84-48, with support from Republicans and a handful of Democrats.

The bills must still get final approval from the state Senate, with votes likely as early as Friday. Neither the House nor Senate has mustered enough support for the bills to override expected vetoes by Dayton.
