5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Investigates: Speeding HotSpots

It's happened to a lot of us: we get pulled over by a police officer, sheriff's deputy, or a state trooper for going too fast.

Now we can tell you where they write the most tickets in the Twin Cities.

A 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS investigation, led by reporter Mark Albert, tracked every speeding citation in the metro for a year, analyzing speeding tickets where you live.

How we gathered the data:

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS obtained data from all 112,519 speeding citations issued in the seven-county metro area in 2010 by contacting the MN Judicial Branch. Court researchers in Hennepin and Ramsey counties compiled the data for those judicial districts at our request; a researcher at the State Court Administrator's Office compiled the data for us from Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Scott, and Washington counties.

The locations of the citations were entered by the issuing law enforcement agency. In some cases, the same location could have been entered by an agency in different variations (e.g. the same intersection in Maplewood was entered as I-94 & McKnight Rd; 94 & McKnight; 94 & McKnight Rd S; etc).

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS made the locations uniform for analytical purposes.

In addition, some agencies did not report location information to the courts, and thus such detail is omitted in this data. For those cities in which no location data exists, the total number of tickets issued in those jurisdictions is listed here, instead.
