Colleen Mahoney - Reporter

Every day I remind myself that people are at the heart of all news stories,” says Colleen Mahoney.  I decided to be a journalist at an early age, and never looked back.”

Previous experience
Colleen joined 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS as a general assignment reporter in July 2007, and most of her journalism career has been with the Hubbard family.  She spent several years reporting, producing, and anchoring at WDIO-TV in Duluth, Minnesota.  In December 2002, she moved to KOB-TV in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a reporter.  Regarding her move back to Minnesota, Colleen said: "I traded my sunscreen and sandals for scarves and snow boots to be closer to family."

Career highlights
In January 1999, Colleen covered Pope John Paul II’s visit to the United States.  In January 2003, she reported on nuclear talks between the North Koreans and New Mexico’s governor.  Colleen has also traveled the Great Lakes on an ore carrier and interviewed several presidential candidates.

Education
Colleen is a Minnesota native who graduated from Wayzata High School with her college major and career path firmly in mind.  She graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Journalism, with Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors.

Awards received
Colleen has won several reporting awards for her work, including an Emmy nomination about Bosnian teens finding peace after war.

Personal interests

Colleen Mahoney is often asked about her last name, which is pronounced “MAH-honey”.  Her grandfather kept the Gaelic pronunciation of the name when he moved from Ireland to America.

When not working, Colleen enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.  The newest member of her family is a Shih Tzu named Bailey, who was found abused and neglected and needed a new home.  "She's adjusted well, and now eats and dresses better than I do!"
