The FBI has agreed to investigate the police brutality claims of a man whose arrest was recorded by a Minneapolis squad car dashboard camera. Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan asked the FBI to investigate Derryl Jenkins' claim after viewing the video. The video shows six officers punching and kicking Jenkins, 42, during a traffic stop in Minneapolis in February. "Some of the actions of responding officers, specifically the kicking of the suspect, give me concern; because of this, I am asking for an outside review by the FBI. Additionally, the incident has been referred to my Internal Affairs and Training Units for a review of our arrest procedures in dealing with suspects resisting arrest," Dolan said in a news release. Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak said Chief Dolan did the right thing by asking for an outside review. Jenkins said he had a late-night dinner and three beers at Rudolph's Bar-B-Que and was headed to a friend's house when he was stopped for allegedly speeding on Feb. 19. He said he was cooperative with the officer after being pulled over. The video showed Jenkins and the officer scuffled when he got out of the car, and then several additional officers arrived on the scene. According to court records, Jenkins was told not to get out of the car. He said he woke up in the hospital with the left side of his face bloodied, while one of the officers suffered a split lip. Jenkins' attorney said they'll likely use this video to file a civil lawsuit against police. "There's still a long way to go, but I am pleased police initiated steps recognizing a problem," Jenkins attorney told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS over the phone. According to police reports, Jenkins resisted arrest. But Jenkins said the video showed he was the victim of an unprovoked attack. Jenkins was charged with assault and refusing to submit to alcohol tests, but those charges have been dropped. |
