Lawyers for Twin Cities businessman Tom Petters will get another six weeks to prepare his defense against accusations he ran a Ponzi scheme.

Wednesday a federal judge granted their motion to delay the start of the trial.

Petters is accused of bilking investors by running a $3.5 million Ponzi scheme. Since his arrest in September, Petters has maintained his innocence.

Jury selection will now start on October 21 and the trial will start October 26. The trial was previously set to begin on September 14.

Part of the reason for the delay was the number of documents the lawyers must review. The government gave the Petters' team more than 6 million pages.

The trial should last between four and six weeks.

The judge did note that this was the third continuance in the case and indicated that he would be skeptical about any further requests.
