2 Dead After Train Hits Dump Truck in Blue Earth Co.

Two men are dead after a train in Blue Earth County broadsided their dump truck on Monday.

The Minnesota State Patrol says driver Jack Baker, 42, and Todd Ziegler, 43, were traveling southbound on County Road 112 when an eastbound Union Pacific train struck their truck shortly before 4 p.m. The incident happened just north of Highway 60.

Both Baker, of Le Center, and Ziegler, of Mankato, were killed.

"“We are overcome with sadness and our thoughts and prayers go out to Jack and Todd’s families and their colleagues at the Highway Department. It will take some time for our Blue Earth County family to grieve this significant loss," said County Commissioner Tom McLaughlin.

Ziegler worked for Blue Earth County’s Highway Department for 16 years, and Baker for 10 years. The department has a total of 45 employees.

The condition of the engineer of the train, pulled by three engines, has not been documented. He has been identified as Justin Nissen, 33, of Estherville, Iowa.

State Patrol deputies say Mayo Air Care, Lake Crystal Ambulance, Gold Cross Ambulance, and the Lake Crystal Fire Department assisted them.
