Monday, April 13, 2009: Cinderella Or The Wicked Queen?

My four year old daughter Hathaway had a doctor’s appointment, so I brought both of my girls with to make sure one didn’t feel left out.  We called it our “girl’s date”.  I made them breakfast, brought them to the doctor with my arms filled with their favorite books and snacks to make sure they were well entertained and promised them a milkshake if they were good.  We actually had fun too.  Even though the wait inside the doctor’s room lasted for more than an hour, we had plenty of things to keep us busy.  There was one disturbing moment though that I keep going back to.  We were going through their stickers, plastering everything from the Disney Princesses to Peter Pan and Captain Hook on every inch of paper we had on us.  Then there were just a handful of stickers left, Hathaway my 4 year old grabbed her favorite Princess, Cinderella, and put it on my jacket, telling me she wanted me to have it.  Delaney, my three year old, responded, by grabbing the Wicked Queen and slapping it on the other side of my jacket.  When I protested she started crying tell me she wanted me to have it. See full size image I left it on, but was See full size imagewondering why she so badly wanted me to wear it.  Just an hour later, I dropped them off at school and went to work.  All day long, I was theorizing why Delaney would associate me with the Wicked Queen.  Was it because I made her try at least three bites of her dinner every night, because it’s a struggle to get her into bed every evening or because she just associates me with the scary woman.  I talked to a few of my co-workers to see what they thought and they all gave some colorful commentary and laughed.  Finally, when I was able to pick the girls up from school that night, I looked at Delaney and asked her why she gave me the Wicked Queen sticker and she just responded, “because I didn’t want it and I wanted to keep Ariel”.  YEAH! My daughter doesn’t think I’m mean, she just needs to work on her sharing.
