Friday, January 16, 2009 – The Best Thing About Winter

I feel compelled to write something good about winter, since everyone I’m bumping into and everyone I know is not feeling the love right now.  So here it goes.  The best part about winter, the sub-zero temperatures in January in particular, is the fact that you can do absolutely nothing and it isn’t frowned upon, in fact, it’s considered a survival skill to some.  I have a 3 and a 4 year old and throughout the rest of our year, our weekends are filled from top to bottom with parties, errands, extracurricular activities and everything else that comes with life with young kids, but come January, all you have to say is “it’s too cold outside” and everybody seems to understand.  So for the last few days, our hours after work and preschool are filled with the four of us cuddled up on the couch watching a movie or playing a game.  No running from here to there, or kids screaming to go outside, or neighborhood skating parties.  We’re just a family who is usually in fast forward mode, forced to enjoy absolutely nothing.  I know that June will be here soon and that the dog days of summer will feel great, but for right now I’m just trying to make the most of weather that even sends chills down a polar bears back.
