(AP) WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (neh-ten-YAH’-hoo) about Iran’s nuclear program, Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations and other Mideast issues.

The White House says the two leaders spoke by phone on Monday.

The call comes as the U.S. is seeking to allay Israel’s concerns about diplomatic overtures from Iran. Iran is seeking relief from economic sanctions in return for concessions on its nuclear program, but Israel is pressing Obama to keep sanctions in place.

Netanyahu is also facing a domestic uproar over plans to release Palestinian prisoners as part of an agreement that restarted long-stalled peace talks with the Palestinians. Secretary of State John Kerry and the U.S. brokered that agreement.

The White House says Obama and Netanyahu agreed to continue coordinating closely on security.
