No, legislative budget negotiations haven't bogged down and forced me to sleep in my State Capitol office while they dither and dicker behind closed doors all night. That's my second favorite time of year. The Boy's State High School Hockey Tournament is underway. For the 5th straight year we at Hubbard Broadcasting are proud to present the television coverage of the tourney on Channel 45.
I get to play hooky from my day job as KSTP's Chief Political Reporter to host the pre-game, intermission and post-game reports for 14 games over four days. In addition to our daily game coverage, we're also featuring classic overtime thrillers in the tournament that have become legendary in Minnesota. The features include the 1985 Minnetonka-Jefferson game that went four overtimes and took two days to play because of a quirky tournament rule. We'll talk to players who took part in a 1955 tournament game that went 11 overtimes. We'll revisit the 1996 Duluth East-Apple Valley game that went five overtimes and is the longest game every played in the tournament in terms of minutes played. Finally, we'll also talk to former Edina coach Willard Ikola about the five straight overtime tournament games his teams played in between 1969 and 1971.
Anyway, if you can't make it to the tournament yourself, kick back at home and catch our coverage on Ch. 45. And if you have friends or relatives from Minnesota who now live elsewhere, they can catch all the games on the internet by going to kstc.com. There is a fee involved, but it's a great way for Minnesotans to stay in touch with one of this state's great traditions.
Now that my backyard hockey rink has melted, I look forward to four straight days at the Xcel Energy Center bringing you all the thrilling high school hockey action.
See you at the rink!
